Denver Broncos head coach watchlist: Kevin O’Connell, OC, Rams

A move like this would not only keep in the theme of going from a defense-oriented head coach to an offense-oriented one, but it would also get the Broncos on the Sean McVay disciple train.

Teams have been trying to find the ‘next’ McVay since the Rams hired him a few years back, and I guess the best way to find the next Sean McVay is to pull from his coaching tree, right?

The Bengals are having some success with Zac Taylor as their head coach two years into his tenure there, and perhaps the Denver Broncos could find success with a guy who has been working with and under McVay for a couple of seasons now with the Rams.

Given the fact that O’Connell has now had two full seasons to absorb everything he can from Sean McVay, it stands to reason that NFL teams will start calling.

The Rams’ offense has taken a huge leap in 2021 with the acquisition of Matthew Stafford, and O’Connell is obviously doing his part along with McVay to make that happen.

The Rams and McVay blocked O’Connell from making a lateral move to the Los Angeles Chargers with Brandon Staley last offseason, so he’s clearly a valuable piece of their staff. They wouldn’t be able to block him from getting a head coaching gig elsewhere, however, and perhaps George Paton will look to O’Connell to revive this ailing Denver offense.
