Denver Broncos: Updated quarterbacks to consider in draft
By Brett Chaves
With the close of the regular season only a few weeks away, it is time for the Denver Broncos to once again begin the quarterback search.
Yes, Teddy Bridgewater still does have a chance to bring the Broncos to their first playoff birth since 2015. However, his play has still been inconsistent at times. He’s also the tenth quarterback to start for the Broncos since the retirement of Peyton Manning.
After all of this, it’s time for George Paton to consider long-term situations.
Because of the nature of the team, there is a strong possibility the second-year GM will bring in a veteran quarterback. The team has re-signed two of their starting receivers to extensions and a third to be re-signed within the next two seasons.
Some names to consider on the veteran market include Kirk Cousins, Russell Wilson, and maybe Aaron Rodgers.
The other option the Broncos have is to go to the draft.
While the NFL Draft can provide long-term stability for many teams, the Broncos have a unique situation on their hands. If they choose to draft a quarterback in this year’s class and they do not pan out in development, Denver could risk losing most of their young core to free agency.
This is why if they do draft, the Broncos have to ensure that they will spend the time and energy in developing the proper quarterback.
Keeping this in mind, there are currently three quarterbacks that could fit the mold of Denver’s unique offense.
Keep in mind the following keys:
- Must be able to establish a run game with Javonte Williams, Mike Boone, and Melvin Gordon (if he returns).
- Can spread the ball out to open the field for his receivers.
- Able to understand the pocket and escape when needed (Denver currently ranks in top 10 for sacks allowed in 2021).
