What is the latest injury update on Denver Broncos star rookie cornerback Patrick Surtain II, who had an MRI on his knee after the team’s win in Dallas?

For the time being, the Denver Broncos can breathe a sigh of relief regarding the injury status of star rookie cornerback Patrick Surtain II, who walked into the locker room against the Dallas Cowboys with a knee injury.

According to Mike Klis, an MRI revealed only a knee sprain for Surtain and given the Denver Broncos’ injury woes this season, that’s frankly some welcome news.

Surtain has been absolutely awesome in his rookie year for the Denver Broncos after being selected 9th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The Denver secondary, as a whole, was outstanding against Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, but Surtain has been the team’s most consistently good cornerback all year long. Losing him for an extended period of time would be a huge blow to the defense, though the team appears to have made the right decision holding out and not trading cornerback Kyle Fuller.

Fuller was one of the studs for the Broncos in the team’s win over the Cowboys.

The injury report for Denver after this Dallas game was rather extensive. Not including Drew Lock, who had a positive COVID test before this game, the Broncos lost offensive linemen Graham Glasgow and Bobby Massie to injuries and Tim Patrick left the game with cramps. Dalton Risner left this game with an injury as well, and guys were being shuffled all over the place.

Glasgow’s injury is, unfortunately, of the long-term variety it seems, but the other injuries were thankfully not.

Over the past couple of weeks, the Denver Broncos’ defense appears to have taken matters into its own hands after the team had suffered four straight losses, completely unraveling after a 3-0 start to the season.

The defense played lights out against both the Washington Football Team and the Dallas Cowboys, and Surtain’s coverage has been a big reason for their resurgence.

Having him for a matchup against his old Alabama teammate and Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith this coming week will be crucial as the Broncos look to improve to 6-4 on the season heading into their bye week.

The Broncos should be getting some reinforcements back in the near future with Essang Bassey and Michael Ojemudia expected to return from the injured list at some point, but even if those guys are healthy, it would be tough to “replace” what Surtain has brought to the table.

What is the timeline for a knee sprain?

That’s a great question and one that is likely to be determined by further testing from the Broncos in the coming days. We’ll have to wait and see how Surtain’s knee responds throughout the week and whether or not he’s able to return to practice.

Depending on the severity of the knee sprain, Surtain could be day-to-day or he could possibly miss this game against the Eagles and return after the bye week.

Everyone is obviously hoping for the former as the Broncos look to win their third straight and let the rest of the AFC West know they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.
