Jamar Johnson, Safety

The fact that Jamar Johnson has had a quiet rookie season is not the end of the world because the Broncos may have seen him as a developmental prospect all along, but you would like to have seen more than you have.

The Broncos used two fifth-round picks, just 12 total picks apart, to select safeties in this year’s draft. With the first, the team took Caden Sterns out of Texas and he is looking like a potential steal. Johnson, who they drafted out of Indiana, is much further off.

Johnson flashed his talent in camp and preseason games this summer, but has yet to suit up in the regular season, instead being a gameday inactive in each week.

The Broncos obviously have Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson, so Johnson’s services haven’t necessarily been required, particularly with the play of Sterns. But reserve safety P.J. Locke has been active for every game and has just one tackle on the season.

You would like to see Johnson start to take his snaps by the end of the season and have Locke be on the inactive list.

So, this is not a player fans should be worried about at this point. He could be progressing nicely behind two solid, veteran safeties. But you would still like to see him dress in uniform by the end of the year and at least get in on special teams.
