3 bad reasons the Broncos will probably pass on Odell Beckham Jr.

3. The team has enough receivers

The Denver Broncos have Courtland Sutton, Tim Patrick, and Jerry Jeudy right now at wide receiver.

That is phenomenal and if those guys can all stay healthy over the course of the season, they should be getting a lot of snaps and hopefully a lot of targets.

With that being said, having good receivers is like having good corners — you can never have too many.

The opportunity to add a 29-year-old Beckham, a guy who already has five 1,000-yard seasons to his name, off of waivers? Well, that kind of opportunity just doesn’t come around very often.

Not to mention, neither of Tim Patrick nor Courtland Sutton are under contract after this year, which leads me to what might be the best case advocating the Broncos put in a claim on Beckham.

Let’s say after the season, you are only able to retain one of Sutton or Patrick. Adding Beckham Jr. now would give you a player who will need to rehab his stock the rest of this season and probably at least next year before getting a new contract.

He’s under contract in 2022 and 2023 for $13.75 million in base salary, and while that may sound like a lot, it’s really on the low-end for receivers of Beckham’s age and caliber.

Let’s say the Broncos do put in a claim on Beckham, they get him, and things go poorly. You can just cut him with really no consequence. Or, you can trade him in the offseason for something.

If things would work out, Beckham might ask for a new deal in the offseason, but frankly, the Broncos could afford something like that and if they decided they didn’t want to pay him, they could reap the benefits in a trade.

One thing that is not arguable — Odell Beckham Jr. would be a better use of a roster spot than, frankly, a handful of players on the roster, including Diontae Spencer, a return specialist who was a healthy scratch for the team’s win against Washington.
