The Denver Broncos face the New York Jets on Sunday with a chance to get to a 3-0 record on the season. Based on the way the Jets have played this season, and recent history, there is a good chance they will.
When these two teams played last season on Thursday Night Football, the Broncos were looking for their first win of the season and were able to get it.
Dating back to 2005, the Broncos have won six of eight meetings over the Jets. The Jets have been able to sprinkle in a few wins here and there during the series, but they have not won back-to-back games against the Broncos when both teams were part of the old AFL.
The Broncos had won four games in a row against the Jets before allowing Isaiah Crowell to have a career day against them back in October 2018 where he ran for 219 yards on just 15 carries for a ridiculous average of 14.6 yards per tote.
The Broncos were able to beat the Jets last season with Brett Rypien making his first career start, but both teams have missed the playoffs for several years running. The Jets will be on the track to do that again unless they can pull the upset of the Broncos this week.
Since 1999, the Jets have only won in Denver two times with the last coming in October 2010. The Broncos have beaten the Jets at home four other times during that same time frame.
The Broncos have a very impressive record in home openers across the last two decades, but they have actually lost in back-to-back home openers the last two seasons and that is a streak they would like to see end. It would also be the first win in a home opener for head coach Vic Fangio.
The Jets have been bad. They have been outscored 44-20 in their two games this season and they looked absolutely anemic against the New England Patriots last week.
The Broncos need to step up and take charge of this game early and keep up their recent success against this team.
Denver leads the all-time series 21-16-1. Though they haven’t lost to the Jets many times in recent history at home, they hold just a 12-8 edge in games played against them in Denver all-time.
