Malik Reed deserves more credit

Though Reed will never be looked at in the same way as Chubb due to their draft status, he should be. Chubb was a top-five pick while Reed went undrafted the following year but Reed has always been an overachiever, clearly making the team as an undrafted free agent and ascending from there.

Whenever Miller or Chubb has been unavailable, which we have shown has been far too often, the team has been able to turn to Reed, who has been a blessing for the team, much like the similarly-undrafted Shaquil Barrett once was.

Since 2019, Reed has played in 33 of a possible 34 career games. He has made 22 starts across that time and he has 10 career sacks. Here are some numbers you will find interesting.

Bradley Chubb:

Career starts: 35

Career sacks: 20.5

Sack ratio: 1 sack every 1.7 games

Malik Reed:

Career starts: 22

Career sacks: 10

Sack ratio: 1 sack every 2.2 games

Those numbers are not far off and now that Reed is going to get another handful of starts, at least, while Chubb is out, he could make that number look even better.

This is not to say that Reed is a better player than Chubb, but so far, he has been far more available and for a player the team got for nothing, he’s produced at a rate close to a guy who was drafted extremely high.

For those curious, Miller averages at least one sack every 1.25 games, an incredibly good number for a player with 137 career starts.

These next six to eight weeks while Chubb nurses his injury are going to be very telling. If Reed can continue to perform at a high level, it could lead the team to make some difficult decisions in the not-too-distant future.
