Special Teams grade, C+

Simply put, special teams are a problem. Giving them a C+ seems generous, but that is in large part due to the play of Brandon McManus and Diontae Spencer. McManus is starting the season perfectly. He’s not missed an extra point or field goal attempt through the second week of the NFL season.

Spencer has done well when fielding punts. There have been no muffed punts or mishandling back when receiving. Also, Spencer is proving to help move field position in favor of the Broncos.

Here’s the problem. The kickoff unit has to be more disciplined and not discombobulated or let its guard down. During the Jaguars game, the Denver Broncos were doing well overall in both punt and kickoff coverage. However, in the one instance after Denver recently scored a field goal the Jaguars took a 102-yard kickoff to the house. These are the little things that separate good teams from bad.

If Denver is playing Kansas City or teams with an elite return man they cannot let up for one second. Moments like that will help swing momentum to the opponent’s way. That’s inexcusable.

Lastly, I do not excuse playing Josey Jewell on special teams. Jewell is a versatile player who can play special teams. The only reason it is a bad look for Tom McMahon is due to the injury of Jewell you lose him in two areas.

Starting linebacker and star special teamer. Seattle has made it a point of emphasis to play starters on special teams in the past. Some teams just operate differently.

Also if your special teams stink, then you might be forced to play starters there in order for it to get better. Unfortunately for Denver they now have to look at replacing Jewell here now.
