The Denver Broncos have a rich history with the New York Giants, despite the two teams playing in opposite conferences.

The Broncos will face each team from the NFC East this season, once one of the top divisions in the league. In recent years, it has fallen off and last year, a team with a losing record (Washington) won the division.

The Broncos will face the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Football Team and Dallas Cowboys this season, but they get started with the Giants in a road trip to begin the year.

This will be just the 14th time these teams have ever played each other, but there have been some memorable matchups between them.

The Giants lead the all-time series 7-6. The last time the two teams played came in October 2017. In that game, the Giants came to Denver with an 0-5 record.  The  Broncos were 3-1. New York won the game 23-10, one of just three victories for them that season.

Of course, the most memorable matchup between the Broncos and Giants came on January 25, 1987, in Super Bowl XXI. It was a nightmarish night for the Broncos as they watched Phil Simms have the best game of his playing career, carving the Broncos up in a 39-20 victory.

In Denver’s last trip to New York to face the Giants, they were able to beat them 41-23 in the battle of the Manning brothers. Peyton Manning threw for 307 yards in that one while Eli Manning threw four interceptions.

Of course, the Broncos had a forgettable trip to MetLife Stadium later that season when they were dominated in Super Bowl XLVIII by the Seattle Seahawks.

There was also a memorable game played between the two teams in December 1998. The Broncos came into that game with a 13-0 record and looked to be a serious threat to match the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins. But with less than one minute to play in the game, Giants quarterback Kent Graham threw a 37-yard bomb to Amani Toomer (video), who beat Denver cornerback Tito Paul on the play for the touchdown and a shocking Giants win.

World history coincides with the Broncos and Giants’ season-opening game 20 years ago

This year, the two teams meet 20 years after the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001. The night before, on September 10, 2001, the Broncos and Giants opened the season against each other on Monday Night Football.

The Broncos lost Ed McCaffrey to a broken leg in that game but still pulled out a 31-20 victory. Of course, all was forgotten by early morning the following day and the league postponed the games that were set to take place the following week.

It’s fitting that 20 years later, these two teams open the season against each other once more.

The Broncos are just 2-5 all-time on the road against the Giants with those two wins coming in 2013 and 1980. Victories against them on the road are obviously few and far between, but the Broncos need to get this one as they are the better team and need to get out to a strong start.
