Most Receptions in a Season: 113

There have only been 10 seasons in team history in which a wide receiver had 100 catches or more and Rod Smith has two of those. His 2001 season resulted in 113 catches, a team record to this day.

That is a lot of catches, but in today’s pass-happy league, it’s really not that many. Teams are throwing the ball more often and receivers that have 100-catch seasons are being seen more and more often. Adding a 17th game could give a guy a chance to catch more than 113 passes.

To show how teams throw the ball much more in today’s league, consider this:

When Smith caught 113 passes in 2001, it ranked at No. 8 for a single season in NFL history. Since 2001, that mark has been surpassed 22 times.

If he can stay healthy, a guy like Courtland Sutton could catch that many passes in this offense. Is it likely? Not necessarily, but certainly possible.

With Teddy Bridgewater focusing on the short, quick passing game, a guy like Sutton should have multiple double-digit reception games this season and those add up.

Smith’s mark is certainly in sight.
