The Denver Broncos know what Diontae Spencer can do.

He is a good return specialist, and there is absolutely value in that.

Spencer may not have a substantial impact on the offense, but he is an asset on special teams and the Denver Broncos can’t really afford any issues in that phase of the game in 2021, especially when it comes to taking possession of the ball.

Spencer has provided consistency even just in terms of catching punts, which may seem like a dumb thing to point out but prior to his arrival, that was a significant problem for the Broncos.

Spencer’s ability in the return game could win him a roster spot as the seventh receiver, but it does feel a little bit like the Broncos were trying to do anything they could to convince themselves to move on and use that roster spot elsewhere.

They gave both Trinity Benson and Kendall Hinton multiple opportunities in the return game, and even though we didn’t see much in games, perhaps Benson has shown them enough in practices to take over as the primary return man.

He certainly has the speed to be a threat back there, if so.

Spencer doesn’t do much else besides return kicks and punts, but he’s really good at it. Moving on from him would be a tough call based on what we see from the outside looking in, but the Broncos need to trust their evaluations on in-house return options including Benson.
