Quarterback Brett Rypien

The Broncos already know what they have in Brett Rypien. Rypien played in three games last  year, starting one. He completed 27 of 40 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns while throwing four interceptions.

Rypien was never in contention to be the starting quarterback, just the backup. Oh, by the way, Teddy Bridgewater will start the season as the starter.

If all things go as planned in 2021, Rypien doesn’t step foot onto the field during the regular season. That’s not a knock on him but rather a statement regarding the top-2 quarterbacks on the team: Bridgewater and Lock.

That doesn’t mean that he’s not a candidate to make the final 53-man roster though. It certainly is possible. This quarterback position is all but great and it may end up being that the team needs Rypien at some point.

It appears that the Broncos have not wanted to risk putting Rypien on the practice squad in fear that he’d get snatched by another team. I’m not sure if that is how they feel about him at this point in time.

If Rypien plays pretty well on Saturday, I highly doubt the team will go into the 2021 regular season with just two quarterbacks. Rypien would make the team.

Do the Broncos go into the 2021 season with two quarterbacks or do they keep Rypien around?

That also may be determined by near-future decisions. It’s possible that Drew Lock gets traded, which would initially place Rypien as Bridgewater’s backup. It’s also possible that the team is in search of another player at the position, which could lead to the release of Rypien. That will be a possibility until the trade deadline in early November.
