Denver Broncos players whose fate with the team depends on game vs Rams.

The Denver Broncos made their first wave of roster cuts to get down to the 53-man limit. Those moves included:

Outside Linebacker Pita Taumoepenu (released)
Linebacker Josh Watson (waived)
Wide Receiver Branden Mack (waived)
Running Back Adrian Killins (waived/injured)
Offensive Lineman Nolan Laufenberg (waived)

The next cut date is August 31st at 4PM Eastern, when all teams need to be at the maximum 53-man limit.

A lot of the team, on initial look, is set. There are many players that will one-hundred percent be on the team. Others will have to earn their spot on the team. It doesn’t matter how it happens. For instance, the first player on this list…

RB Damarea Crockett

Damarea Crockett’s main playing time with the Denver Broncos this preseason has been with the third-team with Brett Rypien under center, but the injury to Mike Boone—who was initially put on the depth chart as the third-string running back—could be good news for him, which I wrote about following that unfortunate event.

It at least could give Crockett more opportunities to make a bigger impact and show what he can do during the team’s final preseason game. Crockett stuck around with the team in 2020 on its practice squad.

As a freshman at Missouri in 2016, Crockett surpassed 1,000 rushing yards and got into the end zone ten times on the ground.

Melvin Gordon and rookie Javonte Williams are locks to make the 53-man roster. Royce Freeman has been rumored to be on the trade block over the past couple of weeks, especially with recent injuries—in particular to Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers. That rumor has fizzled, however, after the Rams traded for Sony Michel on Wednesday.

It is still possible that the team gives Crockett more opportunities to showcase his abilities in week 3 of the preseason, earning him a spot on the team. On the other hand, maybe the team already knows what they want to do with Crockett and place him on the practice squad again.

Special teams seems likely to play a big factor for Crockett, too. If he can produce at that phase of the game, he could stick around longer.

Prediction: Melvin Gordon, Javonte Williams, Royce Freeman, Mike Boone
Practice Squad: Damarea Crockett
