4 &5. Alexander Johnson and Josey Jewell, LB

I find this very fascinating, because, according to PFF, the Broncos boast the 4th best LB duo in the NFL entering 2021.

Why I find this fascinating is that one could argue that our LBs are the “weakest” unit on defense, even though both Johnson and Jewell are very solid players.

Justin Strnad returned from injury this offseason, and the Broncos spent some draft capital on Baron Browning, so it’s clear the team wants to improve their middle unit.

Alexander Johnson will be 30 this season, and Jewell will turn 27, so they’re not exactly young.  Both LBs are also in a contract year and, if they play the way they can, they won’t be cheap to retain.

Enter Baron Browning and Justin Strnad, two linebackers who have much higher ceilings, are younger and are on rookie deals.

I’m not here to bash our current duo, because they’re very consistent, but football is a business, and the Broncos may view this scenario the same way I do.

There is a chance that one of them returns as the LB depth is still in question, but with free agency and draft always available, it’s possible the Broncos move on from both Jewell and Johnson next year.
