Drew Lock looks outstanding in preseason debut for Broncos
The Denver Broncos almost couldn’t have asked for a better preseason debut from Drew Lock against the Vikings. He was outstanding.
It’s just the preseason, which has to in many ways be taken with a grain of salt. With that being said, expectations were high for third-year quarterback Drew Lock to come in and perform well as he competes for his job against Teddy Bridgewater.
Even though it’s preseason action, what Drew Lock was able to do in just three series of work against the Minnesota Vikings was nothing short of outstanding, and very good for Denver Broncos fans everywhere to see.
After an entire offseason worth of speculating on which quarterbacks the Denver Broncos could acquire, everything ultimately just circled back around to Drew Lock. The Broncos’ lack of movement in the free agency and trade market as well as the 2021 NFL Draft at the quarterback position should undoubtedly be viewed as a pretty big vote of confidence from the front office and coaching staff in Lock’s development.
It’s going to require everyone to take things one step at a time, but the debut from Lock against the Minnesota Vikings was tremendous.
To no one’s surprise, Lock’s first throw of the game was off of play-action and a couple of really nice runs from rookie Javonte Williams. By the way, Williams was also tremendous in his Denver Broncos debut.
The first series of the game saw the drive end on a turnover on downs with a failed fourth down play at the Minnesota Vikings’ four-yard line. Lock attempted to fit a ball into Jerry Jeudy’s stomach on a quick slant over the middle, but the window was too tight thanks to strong coverage from Vikings DB Kris Boyd.
Lock maybe could have put the ball a bit more out in front, but it was a strong opening drive nonetheless.
The second series of the game will have everyone buzzing for a while.
This throw from Lock to KJ Hamler is certainly wide open, but it’s also a well-executed play (play-action again) and Lock’s throw is absolutely on point.
Considering there were some significant timing issues last season on Lock’s deep ball, this is really great to see and look at the footwork on his drop.
Altogether, this is just an awesome play to watch if you’re a Denver Broncos fan.
The third series was more in line with series number one, a methodical march down the field from Lock and the Denver Broncos with some help early on from the Vikings jumping offsides.
Drive number three included some really good work from Lock again off play-action but also with Drew Lock using his legs on a six-yard scramble, scanning the field and hanging in the pocket on the Jerry Jeudy catch-and-run, and then throwing a dart to Trinity Benson for the touchdown in the red zone.
Overall, this game has been a complete blowout in favor of the Denver Broncos. In all phases of the game, it’s been really a lot of fun for Denver fans and more than frustrating if you’re a Vikings fan.
The most important part of these preseason games is obviously the individual player evaluation piece, and for Drew Lock, this is a huge notch on his belt. Even as I’m typing this and Teddy Bridgewater has engineered his second straight scoring drive, this game bodes really well for Lock’s chances of ultimately winning that starting job.
