Royce Freeman, RB

I was very close to including Royce Freeman as an obvious cut candidate, but given the injury to fellow running back Mike Boone, well, let’s hold off on that…

At least for now.

Boone is expected to miss between 2-4 weeks with a quad injury that he suffered in a joint practice with the Minnesota Vikings. Prior to that injury, Boone was having a very good training camp. It was so good that many people were cooking up potential trade ideas for Freeman.

Freeman is currently behind Melvin Gordon, Javonte Williams, and Boone on the team’s depth chart. With Boone’s injury, he’ll step into the RB3 role.

That is unless a player such as Damarea Crockett or LeVante Bellamy shines in the limited preseason reps that they could potentially get.

Bellamy spent most of the 2020 season on the practice squad but was called up several times to be active on game day.

At the end of the day, it appears that Freeman could have caught a break with the injury to Boone. It is still possible that the team trades him upon the return of Boone. The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, November 3rd.
