Drew Lock looked about as good as he could in the Denver Broncos’ preseason opener on Saturday.
For fans eager to see what Lock would bring to the table in this new season, they had to leave feeling quite elated. For fans hoping for Teddy Bridgewater to overtake the young former second-round pick, they likely know that the veteran now has a big hill to climb.
Bridgewater did not play badly by any means, going 7-of-8 passing with a pretty touchdown pass to Trinity Benson. But Lock stepped up when he needed to.
I discussed how Lock needed to show out in this game and he did just that while he was on the field.
Drew Lock looked quite comfortable as the team’s starting quarterback and was ready to go from the opening whistle. In limited action, he completed five of his seven throws for 151 yards and two touchdowns, including a beautiful 80-yard toss to K.J. Hamler.
On that play, it was a true glimpse of what the Broncos’ future could look like as Hamler used his quickness to get open, and Lock just laid it out there perfectly.
However, the biggest key in watching Lock’s performance was how cool and collected he seemed. He appeared confident, despite all of the talk about the quarterback position this offseason and he looked like a guy ready to be the team’s starter.
Lock didn’t officially win the competition on Saturday, but he certainly put himself as the easy leader in the clubhouse. Why is that? Because the organization likely wants its former second-round pick to win this job. Bridgewater was brought in to take over if Lock were to fail.
Lock didn’t come close to failing in this game. Bridgewater is still scheduled to make the start in the team’s second preseason game next Saturday at the Seattle Seahawks.
He will need to have a really impressive performance to make this a close competition again.
