Denver Broncos offensive line overview: Youth movement on the interior?
By Noah Smith
Right Tackle
After moving on from Ja’Wuan James earlier this offseason, the Denver Broncos committed to a training camp battle at right tackle. They quickly signed veterans Bobby Massie and Cameron Fleming to compete with third-year tackle Calvin Anderson.
Anderson was an undrafted free agent from the 2019 NFL Draft and signed with the New England Patriots and New York Jets before finding a home in the Mile High City. At 6-foot-5 and 300 pounds, Anderson has the ideal size and length for the position, along with excellent movement skills.
Anderson started two games for the Broncos during the 2020 season, including a game-day notice during week 14 against the Carolina Panthers. Anderson showed signs of promise, and even put together a strong performance against the Panthers.
Anderson will be given the opportunity to win the starting job at right tackle, but he will have to earn it against proven veterans Massie and Flemming.
Bobby Massie played for the Arizona Cardinals and Chicago Bears before signing with the Broncos this offseason and was a solid option for both teams. Massie will likely struggle to keep up with the movement skills of Anderson on screen passes, but Massie’s experience in the NFL will give him an advantage in the consistency of pass protection.
Cameron Fleming was a 4th round pick of the New England Patriots in 2014 and has spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants. Fleming will compete for the right tackle position, and could serve as a bridge between Massie’s experience and Anderson’s athletic upside.
Head coach Vic Fangio has given incumbent Calvin Anderson the first two starts of training camp, a detail that could show the coaching staff’s preference for Anderson to win the job. However, it’s still too early to call a winner for the position.
