Steve Sewell

In 1985, the Broncos used their first-round pick on a running back out of Oklahoma named Steve Sewell. Though he’s rarely talked about these days, he was a key offensive player for a team that qualified for the Super Bowl three times.

Sewell was versatile while in college, but he never posted huge numbers at Oklahoma. Still, he was a guy Dan  Reeves really liked in that draft class due to his high character and the Broncos brought him aboard.

He would prove to be a great weapon for John Elway.

Though Sewell was a running back by trade if you watched the team play back then, you knew he was much more of a threat as a receiver. Remember when the Broncos used to run the shovel play back then? It always went to Sewell.

He never had more than 38 receptions in a season, but he was always consistent. He spent his entire seven-year career with the Broncos and had 187 receptions for 2,354 yards and 13 touchdowns.

He went on to coach football at the high school level in the Denver area following his playing career.
