The Denver Broncos have a ton of talent at the WR position, but there is a chance someone could surprise in training camp. Why not Trinity Benson?

The Denver Broncos have about a million wide receivers on the roster heading into 2021 training camp. There is bound to be a fascinating story to emerge from that position group, which actually includes 14 players in total at this particular point in time.

One of those 14 players at the wide receiver position is Trinity Benson, who is surprisingly entering his third season already with the Denver Broncos.

Part of the class of 2019, Benson is from the classic football powerhouse East Central, a Division II school in Oklahoma with only nine varsity sports as of right now.

Despite the fact that they have just nine varsity sports and one NAIA championship (1993) to speak of, East Central has produced a notable NFL player in recent years in wide receiver David Moore, who just signed a free agent contract in 2021 with the Carolina Panthers.

Moore and Benson were teammates at ECU for two seasons, and although Moore has been productive over the course of the last three seasons while getting a chance in Seattle, Benson is still waiting for his opportunity in Denver.

That opportunity could come rather soon as Benson was among those named specifically by special teams coordinator Tom McMahon when asked about punt return options on the roster right now. That’s a spot Benson has been working at since he came aboard the Denver Broncos in 2019, and is undoubtedly an area he can put his legit 4.4 speed to use.

Trinity Benson getting slept on for the Denver Broncos?

Benson showed off his big-time speed in the 2019 training camp and preseason weeks, and the Denver Broncos signed him to the practice squad after his strong showing there. He has remained a practice squad player ever since, competing every single day on the Broncos’ practice team and just waiting for his shot.

The 2021 offseason is going to be critical for Benson, who should get some very meaningful preseason reps both at receiver and in the return game.

Benson can definitely stretch the field and make plays as a receiver. If he can show he’s a legit NFL return man, he will have no problem making the 53-man roster even in a crowded room for the Broncos.

Not that Denver is looking for a way to cut Diontae Spencer, who has been a very solid return man, but if someone can come along and give them the same caliber of return abilities as well as contribute more on offense, they might be all for it.

Benson has outstanding speed and obviously the team has really liked something in him to keep him on the roster now for three seasons. When will all of that work behind the scenes pay off in the form of some regular season work for Benson?

Hopefully, right here in 2021.
