Denver Broncos edge rusher Bradley Chubb is due for a contract extension soon, but what would an extension look like for the Pro Bowler?

George Paton is going to have his work cut out for him as he progresses through his General Manager tenure with the Denver Broncos.

Next offseason will be a doozy, as he’ll be tasked with trying to keep Courtland Sutton and Bradley Chubb, among others.

Bradley Chubb may be the most important player for the Denver Broncos to keep for 2022 and beyond, and he plays a premium position.

As much as I love a guy like Courtland Sutton, if it gets to a point where the team has to choose one or the other, I’d personally prefer we keep Chubb.

Bradley Chubb, not only plays an elite position but is very good at it.  In 2020, he secured his first Pro Bowl nod, and nearly broke the rookie sack record in 2018, amassing 12.0 sacks playing opposite Von Miller.

With the Vonster set to return in 2021, we should expect both him and Chubb to have monster seasons, and if that’s the case, Chubb’s value will skyrocket.

What would a contract extension for Bradley Chubb look like, though?

For starters, looking at recent deals given to pass rushers is a good place to start.

Bud Dupree received a 5 year, $82 million deal from the Tennessee Titans, and Matt Judon received a 4 year, $56 million from the New England Patriots.  Dupree’s AAV is $16.5 million, and Judon’s is $14 million.

Last year, the Browns gave Myles Garrett a contract with a $25 million AAV.  Let’s also not forget about Leonard Floyd, who signed a contract with a $16 million AAV with the Rams this offseason.

I think these are the most notable extensions we can look at for reference.  In my opinion, Bradley Chubb is a clear downgrade from Myles Garrett but is better than Dupree, Judon, and Floyd.

Using this basic thinking, I would venture to guess that a contract extension for Bradley Chubb would hover around $20 million in AAV

Given that he’ll be another year removed from his knee injury, coupled with the return of Von Miller, I’d expect Chubb to have a stellar season.  If he does perform how is expected of him, a massive contract extension is warranted.

As the salary cap begins to increase, teams will hand out massive deals for players, which constantly reset the market.  While Bradley Chubb probably won’t get what Myles Garrett received from the Cleveland Browns, he can surely get close.

Not only that, the uncertainty with Von Miller’s future after this year could motivate George Paton into wanting to lock Bradley Chubb in for years to come.

An extension could very well occur during the season, which would ensure Chubb doesn’t hit the open market and ensure the Denver Broncos would avoid getting into a bidding war with another team.

No matter what team Bradley Chubb ends up on, I do expect him to sign a lucrative extension.
