As the calendar pushes past Independence Day, the NFL season is drawing closer. As of now, Aaron Rodgers is still a member of the Green Bay Packers.

The deadline for players to opt-out of the 2021 season passed on Friday and it seems that if the Denver Broncos are going to swing a deal for the reigning league MVP, it’s going to have to happen soon.

If we are to believe the comments that the Packers’ organization has made publicly, they are not going to trade Rodgers no matter what. I’ve given my thoughts on that before.

Now is the time for George Paton to contact the Packers and find out how ridiculous the selling price is for Rodgers. Of course, it’s possible he has already done that, but he should ask again.

It’s not often that a potential deal such as this one comes around. As soon as the Broncos became a team mentioned in the same sentence as Rodgers, Paton should have been working on a blockbuster deal.

There’s also the matter of the team’s ownership situation, which makes things quite interesting. If the Broncos were to go up for sale, having Rodgers on the team would make the team very attractive to a potential buyer.

That puts Paton, a rookie general manager, under a lot of pressure.

He clearly had a vision of how he wanted to build this team when he took the job. He has had a good offseason through free agency and the draft but he certainly didn’t anticipate the buzz with Rodgers.

Rodgers is a once-in-a-lifetime quarterback and if Paton hasn’t exhausted all options already, he needs to. He needs to make a deal happen.

The Packers may just dig their heels in and say we’re not trading him no matter what you’re offering. And that would be unfortunate. That would mean that all of this talk surrounding Rodgers to Denver would never be more than rumors and daydreams.

But with training camp starting in about three weeks, time to make a deal happen is definitely running out and the odds of an accord being struck get slimmer by the day.
