Keeping with the Indianapolis Colts theme here, the fit for Trey Burton with the Denver Broncos is an intriguing one.

Burton knows Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur from their time together with the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Denver Broncos currently don’t have great depth at the tight end position.

For those who might be quick to disagree with that, let’s remember last year that Noah Fant dealt with nagging injuries, Albert Okwuegbunam is coming off of a season-ending injury, and top backups Nick Vannett and Troy Fumagalli were let go.

But what about Andrew Beck?

I’m glad you asked. In addition to Beck being lower on the initial depth chart/pecking order at tight end than all of Fant, Vannett, Okwuegbunam, and even Jake Butt prior to injury last year, the Broncos brought Troy Fumagalli off the street free agent heap and played him over Beck at tight end as well.

Beck is more of the fullback/special teams guy for the Broncos, and tight end depth is needed barring a training camp breakout from undrafted rookie Shaun Beyer, free agent Eric Saubert, or former UDFA darling Austin Fort.

Trey Burton has 15 career touchdowns and is an established threat as a pass-catcher. He would be a fun pickup for the Broncos’ offense especially if they intend to keep four tight ends on the roster.
