The Denver Broncos have had an excellent first offseason under new general manager George Paton. Paton got to work quickly, re-signing some key in-house players like safety Justin Simmons, defensive lineman Shelby Harris, and Von Miller as well as bringing in key players from other teams like cornerbacks Ronald Darby and Kyle Fuller.

Even after bringing in 20-plus rookies to compete for roster spots in 2021, Paton’s work may not quite be done just yet.

Leading up to training camp, the Denver Broncos still have some areas of the roster that could use some tinkering. In no particular order, there could be some depth additions made at tight end, on the defensive line, at safety, and maybe at the linebacker positions.

It’s clear at this point that a number of veteran free agents are waiting for the right opportunity to arise, maybe via injury or something else, before they decide to sign with a team for pennies on the dollar. There are still some really big names on the market with guys like Richard Sherman, Justin Houston, Melvin Ingram, Todd Gurley, Mitchell Schwartz, and many others still available.

The Denver Broncos may not go with any of those “big” name players (or will they?) and they may not sign any prominent free agents at all between now and training camp, but if you’ve got the chance to add depth at a discounted rate — and proven depth at that — why wouldn’t you at least think about it?

Armed with nearly $29 million in salary cap space, a miracle in and of itself, George Paton could do some bargain shopping ahead of training camp and really round out his roster with some key veteran pieces that could provide more depth and talent to an already talented roster.
