Denver Broncos: 7 most heated offseason position battles
7. Cornerback
After making the selection of Pat Surtain II with their top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, general manager George Paton looked to Vic Fangio and said, “Well, you got a few corners there, Vic.”
Talk about the understatement of the 2021 offseason.
In addition to the team’s top cornerback in 2020 — Bryce Callahan — at 100 percent health already this offseason following a nagging foot injury last season, Paton went out and signed veterans Ron Darby and Kyle Fuller to add to the cornerback position prior to drafting Pat Surtain II, one of the safest players in the 2021 NFL Draft and a prodigy at the cornerback position.
The Denver Broncos could legitimately trot out any combination of those four guys and they might have a case as the best cornerback duo in the league.
Michael Ojemudia was also a starter last year, and despite his ups and downs as a rookie, is certainly no hack out there.
Essang Bassey and Duke Dawson are coming back from injury, Parnell Motley has intriguing upside, and seventh-round pick Kary Vincent Jr. has potential as a future top nickel corner in the NFL.
Even if you just stop after the top four on this team, it’s going to be fascinating to see how Vic Fangio, Ed Donatell, and new defensive backs coach Christian Parker scheme to get their star defensive backs all out on the field.
We could be seeing a lot of dime packages from the Broncos in 2021.
We’ve talked a lot this offseason about the tremendous depth the Broncos have built at cornerback, but not nearly as much about how they’re going to utilize it.
Watching the battle unfold at training camp for playing time in this star-studded secondary is going to be an absolute blast.
