Will the Denver Broncos take a quarterback sometime on the final day of the 2021 NFL Draft?

It appears to be a possibility, as NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport suggested Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book and the Broncos in the same sentence on Friday.

Rapoport said that he expects Book to go early on day 3. The Broncos currently do not have a fourth-round pick they can use if that’s how high teams think of Book. Depending on the demand of quarterbacks, we might see a move up from the Denver Broncos to take their guy.

Book completed 63.8 percent of his passes in four years at Notre Dame and had a touchdown to interception ratio of 72-20 during that span.

The Broncos traded for Teddy Bridgewater shortly before the draft and he figures to be a competition quarterback for Drew Lock. Book might be another guy who can compete, but despite him potentially being a mid-round pick, I wouldn’t expect him to come in and win a starting job.

If this move happens and Book is drafted by the Denver Broncos, it sort of makes me scratch my head.

If they were going to draft a quarterback, I would have thought it would be in the first round, which took place on Thursday. It is good to have competition all around but if they were going to trade for a quarterback and draft one, this does not seem like the spot to do it.

On the other hand, the Broncos have a potential out on Bridgewater’s contract after the 2021 season. They can decide to let him walk in free agency or pick up the option and have him on the roster in 2022.

Maybe Book will end up being the immediate backup to the starter in Denver in the future. Maybe that’s Drew Lock. Maybe that’s Bridgewater. Maybe that’s someone who we haven’t mentioned yet.

Either way, if the Broncos draft Book, the Broncos’ quarterback room will have changed again, in a matter of just a couple of days.
