Denver Broncos: Team may regret passing on Justin Fields, Micah Parsons
By Sonny Cohen
With the ninth pick in the 2021 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos picked Alabama standout Patrick Surtain II. The cornerback is widely considered to be a safe bet with an NFL-ready skill set and explosive athleticism.
But as is often the case with the draft, fans and experts alike will question whether it was the right pick. With so many young talents still on the board and multiple needs, it is easy to second guess the decision made by first-time general manager George Paton.
Surtain II will join a cornerback room that features free-agent signings, Ronald Darby and Kyle Fuller. Along with Bryce Callahan who will be entering his third year with the team.
It is that caliber of starting cornerback that has raised eyebrows amongst fans. Surtain II certainly has all the tools to be an elite player in the NFL but is it a particular position of need for the team?
There are holes at linebacker, that could still be addressed in day two but with the likes of Micah Parsons and Zaven Collins available. could they have better used that number nine pick there?
There is also a need along the offensive line, specifically at right tackle. Prospective started Ja’Wuan James has played very little football over the last since signing with the Broncos. His first season with the team was hindered by injury before he opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID concerns.
The pick of Penei Sewell by the Detroit Lions may have somewhat changed the direction that their pick went, but Rashawn Slater was still available at number nine.
Just a few hours prior to the draft Broncos fans were sent into a frenzy as rumors of a trade for Aaron Rodgers surfaced. It is hard to believe that any team would pass up on the future Hall of Famer.
But the excitement also pointed to the desire of the fanbase to obtain a new quarterback even after they acquired Teddy Bridgewater via trade just days before the draft.
Which players might Paton regret passing on?
