The Denver Broncos get aggressive selecting Javonte Williams by trading up five spots for the running back from North Carolina.
Javonte Williams has the opportunity to be an absolute superstar of a back. This selection allows the Broncos flexibility and insurance in case the team decides to move on from Melvin Gordon after the 2021 season.
One significant move on the 2021 depth chart might be Royce Freeman. Williams, on the other hand, is challenging for the starting running back job maybe even earlier on and free agent Mike Boone solidified the third spot on the running back depth chart.
Williams is a physical back and receiving back capable of being a dual-threat player out of the backfield. There are a lot of scouts who rated Williams as the top overall running back in this class. He has the makings to be special in Denver.
This is a fierce, downhill runner that can be a dominant three-down back at the next level. One of the fun facts with Williams is he was a track star and linebacker in high school before going to North Carolina to play for the Tar Heels.
If we are talking true replacements, then Phillip Lindsay will have to be mentioned in the same vein as Williams. This might be the sticking point for Broncos fans with why they might hate the selection, but due to the potential of Williams and George Paton’s aggressiveness, it’s hard not to love this new running back.
New general manager Paton was on hand to watch Dalvin Cook in Minnesota. With this class being deep a bit at the position Paton did not hesitate to pull the trigger to find his version of a Cook or even Nick Chubb.
Williams is certainly a gamble based on the “running backs don’t matter” movement. Once the Williams freight train hits Denver, fans who weren’t behind it might jump on early.
