3. 2006

The 2006 draft was a memorable one in Broncos history. That started right off the bat in the first round.

Though the team had reached the AFC Championship Game the year prior with Jake Plummer, it had the No. 11 pick in the first round of the 2006 draft. The Broncos didn’t appear to be in the market for a new quarterback but decided they couldn’t live without Vanderbilt’s Jay Cutler.

With their next three picks, the Broncos found productive players in Tony Scheffler, Brandon Marshall and Elvis Dumervil.

The connection between Cutler and Marshall was fantastic and could have turned into something great. Dumervil became one of the league’s best sack maskers.

Then in the fifth round, the Broncos were able to land Chris Kuper. Though he dealt with many injuries during his career, he is one of the more underrated offensive linemen in team history and is still with the team as an assistant offensive line coach.

Josh McDaniels came in as the team’s head coach in 2009 and blew a lot of this draft up, or there would be a chance it could have ranked even higher on this list if these guys could have had a longer-lasting impact on the team.
