Free agency

This option seems to have all but dried up and the Broncos stayed away from it.

When free agency opened, there were ideas out there that the Broncos might sign a guy like Mitchell Trubisky or Ryan Fitzpatrick, but both of them took deals with other teams.

The veteran Alex Smith presented an interesting option for the team and one that made some sense. However, Smith chose to retire from the league last week. That pretty much ended any idea that the Broncos would bring in a veteran through free agency, as many thought they would.

Looking at the remaining free agents at the quarterback position, there really isn’t much there. It is interesting that Paton chose not to make a move on one of these guys, particularly Fitzpatrick, as he would have been a perfect guy to back up Lock as he did for the young Tua Tagovailoa last season.

That could indicate that Paton is higher on Lock than many seem to believe or that he is interested in selecting a quarterback with his first-round pick.
