The New England Patriots move on from Cam Newton

The Patriots are a team that could be interested in a top-4 quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft.

A name that has been floating around the web is North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance, who offers a similar playing style to that of Cam Newton.

The Patriots could have interest in Lance, as they are set to attend his second Pro Day.

The problem here, however, is that the 49ers, who hold the third overall pick following a trade up with the Miami Dolphins, are interested in Lance too.

If Lance is selected third overall by San Francisco, that leaves the question of when will Justin Fields be selected? Could the Falcons take him at 4? The Bengals and Dolphins won’t be a threat. The Carolina Panthers just traded for Sam Darnold.

So, it really is what your favorite flavor is. Josh McDaniels might be able to make any quarterback situation look good (or at least decent).

Here’s something to keep in mind: the Patriots are in the same division as the Dolphins. That being said, they are unlikely to be trade partners to move up to the sixth pick. That leaves them open to a trade to No. 7, owned by the Detroit Lions.

However, if that happened, that leaves someone else available to trade with Miami.

That complicates things to a great extent.

We don’t know what will happen on April 29th, but we know one thing:

The New England Patriots very well could be looking for their next Tom Brady.

Starts to chuckle.
