Since the 1978 season, the NFL has used a 16-game schedule in the regular season.

It appears as though that will change in 2021, as reports indicate that the league plans to announce a 17-game regular season soon. This really should come as a surprise to no one, as it has been rumored for some time now.

The structure that the league plans to use is one that will add an extra game for each team against an opponent from the opposite conference. The AFC West will clash with teams from the NFC North and since the Denver Broncos finished last in the West, they will face the team that finished last in the North, the Detroit Lions.

The game would be played in Denver.

The Broncos are scheduled to play against the NFC East next season, meaning that in addition to the Lions, the Broncos will square off against the New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Football Team as opponents from the NFC.

The Broncos hold a  slight edge in the all-time series with Detroit, winning eight of the 13 games played between the two teams. The Lions have won just twice in their history in Denver. The Broncos won the most recent meeting between the teams 27-17 in December 2019.

The current Lions will be a different team in 2021 with a new head coach (Dan Campbell) and a new quarterback (Jared Goff), so it’s hard to know what to expect. However, the Lions are a team that has been down forever so if a game has to be added to the schedule, this seems to be a favorable one for the Broncos.
