Number 2: Royce Freeman

We may assume running back Royce Freeman was a winner by the move to let fan favorite Phillip Lindsay move on this offseason. Freeman was poised to remain the team’s second running back heading towards the draft.

However, Paton went to a familiar face and added running back and former Minnesota Viking Mike Boone.

Boone, a multifaceted player, excels both on offense and special teams. Boone’s ability to play on special teams and contribute in the passing game makes his spot secure behind starter Melvin Gordon.

As Gordan and Freeman only have contracts running through this season, the Broncos will likely draft a running back in April.

Additionally, Paton’s former team the Minnesota Vikings were not shy about adding running backs with premium selections. If that trend follows Paton to Denver, Freeman may find himself a training camp cut as the team will likely only carry three running backs into the season.

Freeman’s chances of ever being more than a role-player have been hurt this offseason.
