Broncos free agency: Kyle Fuller could soon join revamped secondary
The Denver Broncos acted quickly to open the 2021 Free Agency signing period, re-signing defensive lineman Shelby Harris and bringing in cornerback Ronald Darby.
Since that time, things have been relatively quiet as far as adding players to the team, though they did make a splash by essentially replacing Phillip Lindsay at running back with fellow former 2018 undrafted free agent Mike Boone.
The market has been moving relatively quickly in the early goings of free agency with some very reasonable, team-friendly deals being struck for players who could have very well been of interest to the Denver Broncos and new GM George Paton.
As it stands, the Broncos have been passing on players, but there might now be an obvious reason why they have been doing that.
With the Chicago Bears in a bit of a cap crunch, starting cornerback Kyle Fuller is set to be released or traded in the very near future. The Broncos will be in pursuit, according to multiple reports.
It seems there’s more than just smoke here. This is an all-out blazing fire.
Kyle Fuller had his best seasons in the NFL so far in Vic Fangio’s defense when Fangio was in Chicago from 2015-18. Although Fuller missed the 2016 season entirely, he blossomed big-time in 2017 and 2018 with Fangio, breaking up 43 total passes and picking off nine more in that timeframe.
After franchise tagging Justin Simmons and signing cornerback Ronald Darby, the Broncos’ secondary has already gotten a boost.
Adding Kyle Fuller to the mix along with a healthy (hopefully) Bryce Callahan?
The combination of Fuller, Darby, Simmons, and Callahan alone has:
- 49 career interceptions
- 225 pass breakups
The Broncos desperately need players who can create turnovers in the secondary, and those four alone have proven on an individual basis that they can make it happen. Collectively, and in Vic Fangio’s defense?
The potential is there for something truly special.
Add in the fact that the Broncos could still add another playmaking safety or give 2020 third-round pick Michael Ojemudia a shot to play there with his physical style of play, and you have the makings of something truly unique in Denver.
Nothing is official at this point. The Bears have not yet officially released Fuller and the Broncos’ interest is only rumored at this point. With that being said, the possibility from both sides definitely makes sense and it could happen soon.
