Broncos free agency: 5 more CB options after Ronald Darby signing
2. Xavier Rhodes, Colts (age: 31 in June)
While George Paton was with the Minnesota Vikings, the team used a first-round pick in 2013 on Xavier Rhodes, a cornerback prospect out of Florida State who fell way further in the draft than anyone thought he would.
After ascending to the point that some felt he was truly the best cornerback in the entire NFL, Rhodes looked like a shell of his former self in the 2019 season for the Vikings.
He ended up signing a prove-it deal with the Colts in the 2020 season and that kicked him back into high gear.
Once again, as will be common throughout this entire piece, the fit in Vic Fangio’s defense is absolutely key here.
Rhodes could be the type of guy the Broncos view as an upgrade on the outside right now over a player like Michael Ojemudia who is finding his way in the league.
It’s important not to sleep on Ojemjudia a whole lot, but if the team is planning on signing a second cornerback in free agency, Rhodes makes as much sense as anyone.
His 12 pass breakups in 2020 with the Colts were the most he had in a single season since 2014.
