Denver Broncos: What have trade rumors done to Drew Lock?
With each passing day, a new trade rumor with the Denver Broncos creeps up.
The Broncos are still heavily rumored to be looking for a new quarterback this offseason, even with potential targets like Matthew Stafford and Carson Wentz already finding new homes. That said, Deshaun Watson is still out there and many Broncos fans are looking for that deal to happen.
One has to wonder what this has done to the psyche of the team’s current starting quarterback, Drew Lock.
Unless the team has talked to Lock behind the scenes and given him a vote of confidence that he will be the guy in 2021, it’s likely that all of this talk is beginning to really impact him mentally. That can’t be good for a player that is still young and developing.
If the Broncos have made the decision internally that they are going to move on from Lock, then the team may not be too worried about what is going on inside the head of Lock, especially if he is going to be part of that trade.
But if the Broncos can’t find the deal they are looking for or if they don’t intend to trade for a quarterback, then they need to work on building up Lock’s confidence if they haven’t already.
If not, you have a quarterback that has only played the equivalent of one full regular season and has dealt with injuries to key players around him. In addition, he hasn’t had the same offensive coordinator in back-to-back seasons since high school.
Lock has definitely made some throws that had everyone watching shaking their head. But he has also made some incredible throws and done things like led the team on a wild comeback victory over the Los Angeles Chargers this past season.
There have been ups and downs with Lock. But he hasn’t been that bad. The team can win with him if the organization is willing to get behind him and show some real confidence.
These trade rumors have already gotten annoying and if some of those sitting at home feel that way, it’s hard to imagine what is going through the mind of Lock. However, if he is a true competitor, he will use it to fuel him for next season, creating a rather large chip on his shoulder to go out and prove people wrong.
Lock seems like the type who could thrive in a situation such as that.
