Now that the Super Bowl and the 2020 NFL season have concluded, free agency is looming in the near future, and with new GM George Paton at the helm, the Denver Broncos are sure to make some key moves.
Though the jury is still out on whether the Broncos will inquire about the availability of guys like Deshaun Watson and Carson Wentz, Paton has insisted early on that the Broncos will be in the mix of “every deal.” We are closer every day to finding out if that is true.
Meanwhile, looking through a list of the top free agents at all positions, the Denver Broncos might be the best fits for a few guys in particular.
We will preview three specific players and what they could bring to the Denver Broncos.
Andy Dalton, QB, Cowboys
Dalton is sort of a “next best” option if the big-name guys are not available for Denver. With Matthew Stafford already off of the board, Deshaun Watson unlikely available or affordable, and Carson Wentz now with the Colts, perhaps a guy like Andy Dalton may truly be the best option for the Broncos.
He may not be your first, or second, or even third choice. However, setting aside reservations about Dalton, after being brought in by the Dallas Cowboys to solely be a backup, Dalton was thrown into the starting position once again after Dak Prescott’s season-ending ankle injury.
With all things considered, Dalton played pretty well, though likely not well enough to be retained by the Cowboys. While, if Denver misses out on the big-name quarterbacks, they could simply roll with Drew Lock, it would be best if the team brought in some competition for Lock, if nothing else, a veteran presence to mentor him.
Drew Lock had some regression in 2020, and he did not play well enough to warrant being the undisputed starting quarterback for Denver. If nothing else, a guy like Andy Dalton puts pressure on Lock to elevate his game and show he is undoubtedly ready to lead this football team.
