As of right now, Drew Lock is still the starting quarterback of the Denver Broncos.

The key words there are right now. If Lock intends to keep his job, there are still several potential hurdles for him to clear. It’s not enough that seemingly half the starting quarterbacks in the league are suddenly on the trading block, but free agency and the draft are still to come.

The Broncos could easily add a veteran quarterback to come in and at the very least, compete with Lock for the starting job in 2021. They could also find a quarterback in the first round of the draft and with the No.9 overall pick in their pocket, that is a distinct possibility.

For Lock, he needs to try to remain calm and confident.

Remember last offseason where frustration was boiling over within the fanbase about how bad Garett Bolles was? The Broncos needed to sign a veteran left tackle in free agency or take one in the draft, according to many of the fans.

The Broncos did neither of those and though they had chosen not to exercise the fifth-year option of Bolles, they went into the season with him as the team’s starting left tackle.

Of course, there were rumors about how Elijah Wilkinson could steal his job in training camp (insert laugh here).

Bolles went on to have an amazing season with the team in  2020 and as a result, was rewarded with a new contract before the season was even over. Bolles went from a penalty machine to one of the best left tackles in 2021.

Could the same happen with Lock? Of course.

Lock is a bit of a turnover machine, but he has also shown flashes of being a great quarterback. Though fans are thirsty to get a guy like Deshaun Watson in the mix, it’s just not worth the price tag. Sorry, but I absolutely stand by that.

A trade for a guy like Carson Wentz or Sam Darnold, which would still cost a bit, makes even less sense.

Bolles could pull his quarterback aside and give him some pointers on keeping his head up. Clearly, Bolles didn’t listen to the noise within the fanbase or the media about how the team needed a better option and Lock should tune it out as well.

Lock should be the starting  quarterback in 2021. Is he the best option? It’s easy to say he’s not, but we don’t know that beyond a reasonable doubt. This team is not a quarterback away from Super Bowl contention anyway.

The right move is to continue to build around Lock with what they have. This is a time for Lock to get focused and keep his eyes forward, not worrying about who might be coming behind him.

Bolles learned that last year and stepped up in a big way in 2020. Lock could easily lean on the big guy for some support and advice. You never know, Lock might just pull out the kind of season Bolles just had as a result.
