Denver Broncos: Which Super Bowl loss was the worst?
3. Broncos vs. San Francisco 49ers- Super Bowl XXIV, 1989
The Broncos had beaten the Cleveland Browns for the third time in the AFC Championship Game, reaching the Super Bowl for the third time in four years. Again, they came up against a tall task.
The worst part about this game was the margin of defeat. The 45-point loss is still the biggest in the history of the Super Bowl as the 49ers absolutely dominated the Broncos, 55-10.
It’s hard to get too mad about this loss though. If you ask me, that 49ers team is the best team the NFL has ever seen. It had it all.
Joe Montana was throwing to Jerry Rice in those days and the pair connected for some big plays in this game. Montana completed 22 of his 29 pass attempts for 297 yards and five touchdowns, which at that time was a Super Bowl record.
Rice caught seven passes for 148 yards and three scores.
As for the Broncos, they just had no chance as the 49ers had a top-notch defense as well. The Bronco had just 167 yards of total offense in this game. John Elway threw two interceptions and was sacked four times in a game that was one of the most frustrating to watch in Broncos history.
