Denver Broncos final 2020 stock report: Melvin Gordon

Although Melvin Gordon’s time with the Broncos had a tumultuous start, it became clear as the season progressed that Melvin Gordon was a good acquisition for the Denver Broncos.

Of course, Gordon struggled with ball security but was essentially Denver’s most effective back in 2020.

He finished the season with 9 touchdowns and 986 rush yards, falling just short of the thousand-yard mark.

Though a drunk driving charge was a pitfall to Melvin’s season, he overall had a solid campaign. We did not get the 1-2 punch with Gordon and Lindsay that fans had anticipated.

If Pat Shurmur can figure out how to utilize them both, fans could finally be treated to a show in 2021.

The Pass Rush

When Von Miller went down with a dislocated peroneal tendon prior to the start of the 2020 NFL season, it felt like the pass rush would have a down season, and may have to rely more heavily on the secondary for an effective defense.

The pass rushers took that personally.

The Denver Broncos finished 8th in the league overall in sacks per game, averaging 2.6 per game (per Team Rankings). The Broncos finished with 42 overall sacks in 2020, two more than in the 2020 NFL season.

In the absence of Von Miller, the younger guys stepped up in a big way. Malik Reed led the team with 8 sacks in 2020, with Bradley Chubb right behind him at 7.5, and guys like Dre’Mont Jones, Jeremiah Attaochu, and DeMarcus Walker making big contributions as well.

Von Miller’s future with the Denver Broncos has been a major discussion point this offseason, and while of course, Broncos Country wants to see one of the best players in franchise history spend the remainder of his career as a Denver Bronco, this pass rush has given reason to believe that if Von departs, this unit will be alright.
