Broncos: 3 Surprising 2021 NFL Draft moves that could happen
All eyes will be on new general manager George Paton as he begins the evaluation process for the Denver Broncos in the 2021 NFL Draft.
His record would indicate that he knows how to draft, and draft very well, but there is still no guarantee that one thing or the other will happen.
We’ve been accustomed to John Elway and his guys drafting the past decade, so seeing Paton in the draft room will be a bit of a shock. As I stated in my previous article, Paton, during his introductory presser, said a lot and nothing at all.
In my opinion, you would be lying to yourself if you thought you knew what he and the staff were doing come draft day, but it is still fun to speculate.
With that being said, I do believe there are a few scenarios that would come as a surprise to the fans if they were to come to fruition on draft day.
Broncos surprising moves: Trading UP to select a quarterback
Depending on who you talk to, this wouldn’t be a surprise at all, but listening to George Paton would indicate to me that his preference is to stockpile picks.
You see, Paton was with the Minnesota Vikings last year, and they had a whopping 15 draft selections, and being that the Broncos have a solid foundation in place, and a quarterback who ended the season on a strong note, it would be a surprise to me if the Broncos would make a move up the boards for a quarterback.
Benjamin Allbright, who is one of the most reliable sources for NFL related news, has tweeted a few times that he expects the Broncos to “run it back” with what they have now, player wise. Vic Fangio and Pat Shurmur obviously will return for at least 2021, but everything could be on the table for the players.
However, the team made great strides last year, and were expected to be a borderline playoff team this before, before COVID and injuries had other plans.
The most likely scenario for the quarterback room is a respected vet to compete with and push Drew Lock, a la Andy Dalton, Jacoby Brissett, etc. This allows Paton to assess Drew Lock fairly and allows him to evaluate other players as well.
