Denver Broncos 2020 FA Grades: Sam Martin, P

Contract: 3 years, $7.05 million ($2 million guaranteed)

You don’t always notice special teams unless your team is really bad in specific areas. Kickers and punters who do their jobs consistently are not always highly regarded, but having consistency at those positions is so critical.

The Denver Broncos obviously prioritized exactly that with the signing of Sam Martin, who wound up having the 10th-highest punting average in the NFL (46.8 yards per punt).

He also finished the year 12th in net punting but was sort of middle of the pack with 19 kicks inside the 20 yard line.

Martin did have one punt blocked this season and others that were very, very close to being blocked.

The Broncos’ special teams as a whole has not been good in recent years. Martin’s strong punting abilities were a welcomed addition and obviously, he also has the responsibility of holding for field goals.

Since Martin was an obvious upgrade over Colby Wadman and the others who have come before him, it’s hard to find a ton of fault in this signing considering the price.
