Broncos smash Jacksonville

Few victories in team history were more satisfying than this.

In 1996, the Broncos finished 13-3 and looked like the best team in the league going into the playoffs. It seemed, at long last, that Broncos fans would finally celebrate a Super Bowl win.

But the Jacksonville Jaguars had other ideas.

Mark Brunell brought Jacksonville to Mile High Stadium and the Jags, in just their second year of existence, pulled off one of the biggest upsets in NFL history, shocking the Broncos.

The Broncos were still good in 1997 but a 12-4 record was only good enough for a Wild Card. The Broncos ended up drawing the Jaguars in the Wild Card round of the playoffs and the Jags had to come back to Mile High.

The game was never close.

The Broncos jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back. Jacksonville tried to claw their way back into it, but Denver had way too much horsepower.

Terrell Davis had a massive day, carrying the ball 31 times for 184 yards and two touchdowns on the day. As a team, the Broncos ran for 350 yards in the game and outgained the Jaguars 511-237 in total yards of offense.

The final score was 42-17. The Broncos were on to the next round and Jacksonville was headed home. It was sweet, sweet revenge.

And of course, that season did end with the Broncos finally hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.
