5 options for the Denver Broncos to consider in the 2021 NFL Draft
By Noah Smith
If Caleb Farley is off the board for the Denver Broncos, Patrick Surtain is definitely someone the Broncos should consider. Surtain has excellent size for a boundary cornerback in the NFL and has high-end experience from Alabama.
Surtain may be a safer pick for the Broncos, as his skill set is more pro-ready than that of Caleb Farley. However, Surtain has good athleticism for the position and would give the Broncos a solid option to play boundary cornerback.
While Farley has the elite athleticism and upside, Patrick Surtain has elite starting experience and is ready to step in and contribute at a high level immediately for a team. Surtain started three years for the Crimson Tide defense, a sign of a high-level player for Nick Saban.
Surtain also showed off his instincts at Alabama with 4 interceptions and 23 passes defended over three years. Surtain also gained valuable experience playing in the SEC and College Football Playoffs, where he faced some of the top tier receivers in college.
Along with his experience, Surtain has access to a wealth of knowledge from his father, also Patrick Surtain, who played cornerback for 11 years in the NFL. Surtain can learn from his father, and receive additional coaching from a long-time NFL player.
While Caleb Farley provides more upside for the Broncos, Patrick Surtain II will likely provide a higher floor and an immediate impact. The Broncos would be smart to invest in cornerback, and Surtain would be an excellent option to replace A.J. Bouye with.
