Broncos don’t need a veteran QB, unless it’s to be a backup

Another offseason in Denver could be filled with quarterback questions.

Drew Lock is about to complete his first full season as the team’s starting quarterback and there are questions all over the place about whether or not the team should move on from him. Have we already seen enough out of Lock?

There is no doubt that he has a long way to go to be a great NFL quarterback and it’s entirely plausible that he won’t ever get there. But it seems a bit early to be throwing in the towel already.

Lock lacks good decision-making thus far. He throws off of his back foot too often and he turns the ball over way too much, trying to make throws that just are not there.

But Lock doesn’t lack confidence and the talent is there. If you are not convinced of that, just go back and watch what  he did against t he Carolina Panthers. That performance was one of the best any quarterback had in the league this season.

Lock just needs more time to develop and he needs to be more consistent. That could come with a coaching staff and front office that is willing to be patient.

So this notion that the Broncos should try and land a quarterback such as Matthew Stafford or Sam Darnold should be dropped. This team is not just a quarterback away and the quarterback position is far from the biggest that the Broncos have.

Now if the Broncos were to be interested in a veteran quarterback to come in and be Lock’s backup, such as the ones listed here, that makes perfect sense. When Lock went down in Week 2, the Broncos’ 2020 season took a nosedive.

Having to turn to Jeff Driskel was less than ideal and though Brett Rypien didn’t play bad when he was forced into action, a veteran with a wealth of real game experience makes sense. That player could also help with the development of Lock.

Lock has only made 17 starts un his career, barely over the equivalent of one full NFL season. To already be saying that it’s time to show him the door is a bit much, especially if you’re on the side of retaining Vic Fangio as head coach.

If Fangio should be retained because he had no real offseason and had to deal with too many injuries, than the same applies to Lock. Fans should be willing to give the quarterback one more season, at least, to show he can be the team’s quarterback for the long-term.
