Three Reasons the Denver Broncos should sign Dak Prescott.

We cannot talk about the Denver Broncos without talking about our ever so fluid quarterback situation. So, let’s do it some more!

Drew Lock has shown solid progression over the past several games and has a chance to end the year strong against a suspect Raiders defense. While it seems the Broncos will “run it back” with their offensive personnel, John Elway and Co. would be mistaken to not go all-in for pending free agent Dak Prescott.

So, let’s talk about a few reasons why this would be a stellar move.

1. Prescott is still young

Drew Lock is younger than Prescott by a few years, but going all-in on Prescott would most likely warrant a 4-5 year commitment from the Broncos. Fortunately, Prescott is just 27, and by all indications is poised to enter or continue into the prime of his career.

This is a far different situation from Peyton Manning’s, as he was well into his 30s when he signed with the team, and many wondered how many years he’d last. Prescott’s age would allow himself and a team to come to an agreement on a long-term deal.

2. Denver is a smaller market

This is kind of an odd reason, but I think it holds some water. The Dallas Cowboys are “America’s Team,” and are run by a man who always, and I mean always says what’s on his mind in Jerry Jones. Not only that, Dallas is a massive sports market, and its fanbase has a large, corporate feel.

At some point, being the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys has to get tiring, right?  Jerry Jones always seems to be running his mouth, and the Cowboys are seemingly always talked about on national TV.

Denver presents a much smaller and calmer market for Prescott.  He wouldn’t be subjected to the constant national media attention, and he’d get to play for one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time in John Elway. Not only that, he would most likely be the “guy” for years to come, finally closing the door on the ‘successor to Manning’ talk.

3. Prescott is freakin’ good, man

I could leave reason three as it is and end the article here, but I won’t. Dak Prescott is really, really, really good, guys.

Prescott had his best year to date in 2019, passing for 30 TDs, only 11 INTs, with a 65.1% completion percentage.  He followed up 2019 with a strong start to 2020 before suffering a gruesome lower leg injury, ending his season. Through five games in 2020, he put up 9 TDs, 4 INTs, and a whopping 1,856 yards on a 68.0% completion percentage.

If we do some quick math, his stats through 5 games in 2020 over a 16 game season would put him at roughly 29 TDs 13 INTs, and a whopping 5,939 passing yards, which would smash the NFL record.

Broncos Country, wouldn’t you take those numbers in a heartbeat?  With our notoriously strong defense, we’d surely win double-digit games and be competing for a playoff berth.

If John Elway wants to continue being the General Manager of the Denver Broncos, he should consider making a splash move. His contract ends after the 2021 season, and the new owner, whoever it may be, needs to have a reason to give Elway a contract extension.

Dak Prescott would certainly do that. I still believe in Drew Lock and think he figures it out, but the Broncos cannot pass up on an opportunity like this.
