Conclusion

These are all valid critiques of Drew Lock‘s game right now and are reasons why many fans in Broncos Country want him replaced in 2021 as the starting quarterback.

With that said, not every quarterback’s development process and timeline is the same and other fans are practicing patience.

Against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Broncos’ offense didn’t have a single three-and-out. You would love to see no turnovers in addition to that, but they were in a position to score on the majority of their drives leading up to that 4th-and-3 from midfield where Vic Fangio opted to punt instead of go for it in the fourth quarter.

In addition to not having any three-and-outs, the Broncos went 7-of-13 on third downs in this particular game and were 2-for-2 in red zone opportunities, both touchdowns to Tim Patrick.

In his last two starts, Drew Lock has looked much better than he did against the Las Vegas Raiders and Atlanta Falcons. With that being said, it’s frustrating that it seems he seemingly needs to throw an interception to settle into the game.

His great throw to Noah Fant followed by the mind-numbing pass to Troy Fumagalli in triple coverage is a microcosm of the dilemma the Broncos are facing with Drew Lock right now. Do you take the good and hope he progresses in year three to learn from the bad?

With John Elway in a contract year and Vic Fangio also heading into year three, will everyone be willing to stake their jobs on that?

I’ve been preaching patience with Lock all season and will continue to do so. I think these last two games (@ Kansas City, vs. Miami) have represented progress from the games that preceded them.

The Broncos will likely bring a better hedge to town to upgrade over Jeff Driskel and probably even Brett Rypien, but continuity with Drew Lock and Pat Shurmur should still be a priority for the Denver Broncos.

With a better hedge in place in 2021, if Lock continues these three things he needs to stop doing, the Broncos will be able to move to the hedge and reset.
