5 Chiefs the Denver Broncos need to worry about on Sunday Night

4. Tyrann Mathieu

The “Honey Badger” is one of the most instinctual players in the NFL, and is the unquestioned leader of the Chiefs’ secondary.

Mathieu is a versatile player for the Chiefs and fills many roles in their defense. Mathieu spends plenty of his time playing deep in a two-high safety look the Chiefs often deploy, but he also spends plenty of time in the box causing chaos for opposing quarterbacks.

Mathieu is capable of lining up against receivers and running backs split out wide and has excellent coverage skills. He can truly do it all for the Chiefs and is a headache for opposing quarterbacks with his constant energy.

If the Broncos don’t account for Mathieu’s playmaking ability on the back end, he will absolutely wreck the Broncos’ game plan. Drew Lock will need to make sure he knows where Mathieu is lined up at on every play and will need to look away from Mathieu in coverage.

Mathieu has also had great success as a blitzer against the Broncos. Identifying the Chiefs’ blitzes before the snap will be a point of emphasis for Lock during Sunday’s matchup. The Broncos need to allow their playmakers to work after-the-catch, and not try to force errant passes downfield.

Mathieu is the heart and soul of the Kansas City defense and is their vocal leader on the field. Neutralizing Mathieu’s impact on the field will give the Broncos confidence, and will give the offense a chance to put some points on the board.
