Denver Broncos: 4 reasons Vic Fangio should not be fired
3. Vic Fangio is really good at his job
Even though the Denver Broncos have not been perfect defensively, Vic Fangio has lived up to his billing as a truly elite defensive mind.
No matter what personnel is out there for the Broncos, it’s very rare for the Denver defense to look like it’s overmatched, out of position, or unable to play well any given week.
Fangio knows how to scheme a defense, and his players play within the confines of that defense very well. Even when the Broncos do give up big plays, they bounce back and have typically been one of the best red zone defenses in the entire NFL over the past two seasons.
In addition to scheming a great defense every single week, Fangio has done his part to help players develop on that side of the ball in two seasons.
You can point to any number of players at each level of defense who have played some of the best football of their careers in Fangio’s defense with the Denver Broncos.
On the defensive line, Mike Purcell went from the AAF to earning three total contracts from the Denver Broncos, two short-term deals before a longer-term extension.
At linebacker, the Denver Broncos have seen Alexander Johnson and Josey Jewell go from undrafted dart throw and day three draft pick respectively to the team’s full-time starters.
In the pass rush department, 2019 first-round pick Malik Reed has emerged for the Broncos as a full-time starter with Von Miller injured (and Bradley Chubb the year before him) and is enjoying a breakout season of his own.
In the secondary, Justin Simmons became a 2nd-team All-Pro in Vic Fangio’s defense, while 2019 free agent pickup Kareem Jackson converted to the safety position in Denver full-time and has been a tremendous pickup.
There are plenty more examples but Fangio’s defensive scheming and player development on that side of the ball have shown that he holds his players to a standard of excellence, and they are putting in the work to get better.
