3 Takeaways from the Denver Broncos huge win over the Miami Dolphins

3. Drew Lock trusted his teammates, and they rewarded him
Drew Lock was the focus of many peoples’ criticism coming into Sunday’s matchup. Lock had thrown 10 interceptions and had struggled in leading the offense consistently up and down the field.
On Sunday, Lock threw an early interception while staring down his receiver in coverage. While many were ready to jump off the Drew Lock wagon, Lock flipped a switch after his ugly interception.
The key for Lock on Sunday was to trust his offense. We’ve seen the Broncos’ offense struggle in games early this year. In those games, Lock often looks to shoulder the offensive struggles and play “hero ball”.
Against the Dolphins on Sunday, he did the opposite. While Lock certainly made plenty of excellent throws into tight coverage, he trusted his offensive line and allowed them to protect him. His trust in them was well deserved, as the Broncos didn’t surrender a sack to a ferocious Miami defense.
Lock also trusted his receivers, throwing them open on key plays. Instead of taking deep, desperation shots downfield, Lock methodically found the open man and gave his weapons a chance to work after the catch.
Drew Lock is most effective when he allows his weapons to shoulder the load. Lock throws with accuracy and anticipation inside the pocket, and Sunday’s game was an excellent showcase of how effective Lock can be when he trusts his protection.
The Broncos needed to see a bounce-back performance from Drew Lock, and he certainly delivered. Lock may not fill up the stat sheet by relying on his team, but the Denver Broncos are undoubtedly a better team when he does.
If Drew Lock can use Sunday’s performance as a building block, the Broncos’ offense may be headed in the right direction sooner rather than later.
